Barbados Climate Guide
Climate Overview
Barbados has a tropical maritime climate with a dry season from December through May and a wet season from June through November. As the easternmost island in the Caribbean, it is fully exposed to the Atlantic Ocean and receives the persistent northeast trade winds at 16-24 km/h10-15 mph.
Annual rainfall averages around 1,275 mm50 in along the coast, increasing to roughly 1,875 mm74 in in the higher central highland areas.
Daytime highs are remarkably stable year-round, ranging from 29 °C84 °F in winter to 31 °C88 °F in summer, with overnight lows between 22 °C72 °F and 24 °C75 °F. Rain during the wet season typically falls in intense but short-lived afternoon and evening showers.

Hurricane History
Barbados's eastern position means many Atlantic storms curve north before reaching the island, resulting in fewer direct hits than islands further along the chain. However, when storms do strike, they approach from the east with little warning time.
Historical records include the Great Hurricane of 1780, one of the deadliest Atlantic hurricanes ever, which killed over 4,300 people on the island. Hurricane Janet (1955, Category 3) killed 35 people and left 20,000 homeless.
Between Janet and 2021, Barbados went 66 years without a direct hurricane hit. Hurricane Elsa (2021, Category 1) broke that streak, damaging over 2,300 houses.
Hurricane Beryl (2024, Category 4) passed approximately 150 km93 miles south of the island. It was the earliest Category 4 on record in the Atlantic at that time, causing an estimated $96.5 million in damage and damaging or destroying over 200 fishing boats.
Geography & Terrain
Barbados covers 432 km²167 sq mi and is geologically distinct from its volcanic neighbours. The island is composed predominantly of coral limestone, formed as an uplifted accretionary prism on the Barbados Ridge.
Mount Hillaby, the highest point at 340 m1,115 ft, sits in the north-central parish of Saint Andrew. The relatively low, flat terrain means Barbados lacks the orographic lifting that produces heavy rainfall on mountainous islands, which is why it receives less annual rainfall than neighbours like Dominica or Saint Lucia.
The Atlantic-facing east coast receives the full force of trade winds and ocean swells, while the sheltered west coast ("Platinum Coast") is notably calmer. The porous limestone bedrock means surface rivers are rare, and groundwater is the primary freshwater source.
