Climate Overview
Antigua and Barbuda has a tropical maritime climate with a dry season from January through April and a wet season from July through November.
Annual rainfall at the coast averages around 1,050 mm41 in, rising to approximately 1,300 mm51 in in Antigua's volcanic southwestern hills due to orographic lift.

Hurricane History
Antigua and Barbuda lies in the main development region for Atlantic hurricanes, with a major storm affecting the islands roughly once every three years.
Hurricane Hugo (1989, Category 4) passed south of Antigua with 230 km/h145 mph winds, damaging 15% of homes and causing two deaths. Hurricane Luis (1995, Category 4) made a direct hit on Barbuda with sustained winds of 215 km/h135 mph and over 250 mm10 in of rain, destroying hotels and homes in one of the worst storms in the nation's recorded history.
Hurricane Georges (1998, Category 3) brought 185 km/h115 mph winds and island-wide power outages.
Hurricane Irma (2017, Category 5) devastated Barbuda, where 95% of structures were damaged or destroyed and the entire population of roughly 1,800 was evacuated to Antigua. Antigua itself, 48 km30 miles to the south, sustained moderate damage.
Geography & Terrain
Antigua (281 km²108 sq mi) has three distinct geological zones: volcanic hills in the southwest including Mount Obama (formerly Boggy Peak) at 402 m1,319 ft, the island's highest point; a central clay plain; and low-lying coral limestone formations in the north and east.
This varied terrain creates a noticeable rainfall gradient, with the southwestern hills receiving up to 30% more rain than the flat northern coast.
Barbuda (161 km²62 sq mi), located 48 km30 miles north, is an almost entirely flat coral island with a highest point of just 44 m144 ft. Its complete lack of elevation leaves it extremely vulnerable to hurricane storm surge. This explains why storms like Irma (2017) caused catastrophic damage on Barbuda, as there are no natural windbreaks or high ground for shelter.
